Recorder Videos

I can't come home with you, but you can use these videos at home to practice!

By fourth grade, we are ready to put all that hard-earned musical knowledge from the last several years to use - we learn to play the recorder.

We use the Recorder Karate program from Plank Road Publishing.

When students learn a particular song really well, they "test" for it.  If they have truly mastered the song, they eran a "belt" - a color-coded string that ties onto their recorders.

Some students have earned so many belts that they are running out of room on their recorders!

RECORDER VIDEOS

for home practice

Thanks to Ms. Gabriel, a music teacher who creates and posts these practice videos on her youtube channel!

Old MacDonald is tricky because of all the pairs of 8th notes.  Say the "tas" and "ti-ti"s in your head when you practice.

When the Saints Go Marching In is challenging because of all the ties.  Review the information on the bottom of the page in your book before you test!

The main focus of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star is the new F# (f-sharp).  Review the fingering on the page in the book before you test!  If you're playing it correctly, your right pointer finger will be off the recorder.

Amazing Grace is really the hardest song in the book, even though it's not last!  Practice it with the video, and listen to some additional recordings of singers performing this song to help you.

Ode to Joy  earns you the Black Belt!  You're almost there.  This song must be played with a steady beat and no "thinking breaks" between notes.  Stay with the video and you'll be fine.
